These reptiles can no longer be
hunted, although the NT government may have to adopt a culling program
in the near future to control their growing numbers. Their range stretches
from the north-east coast of Queensland Their abundance in rivers, creeks and swamps attract many tourists. Poachers from past years were also attracted to these living fossils for their valuable skins. Apart from the leather value, their skulls and teeth were also prized by many as a trophy of this once hunted species. Today, All crocodile materials comes from managed breeding farms located in northern Australia. Here, crocodiles are kept and bred under carefully researched, management programs which are strictly controlled. The leather is used to produce footwear, hand bags, wallets, belts and a range of other items in countries such as Singapore and France.
