Brett's Croc Hats

Introduction to crocodiles
Crocodiles

Crocodiles are the remains
of a large prehistoric group of reptiles which existed more than 150 million years ago. Although the Top End of Australia
boasts a large number of both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, they are a protected species by law and have been since 1971.

These reptiles can no longer be hunted, although the NT government may have to adopt a culling program in the near future to control their growing numbers. Their range stretches from the north-east coast of Queensland
and across the Top End of Australia
to the far reaches of the Northern Territory.

Their abundance in rivers, creeks and swamps attract many tourists. Poachers from past years were also attracted to these living fossils for their valuable skins. Apart from the leather value, their skulls and teeth were also prized by many as a trophy of this once hunted species.

Today, All crocodile materials comes from managed breeding farms located in northern Australia. Here, crocodiles are kept and bred under carefully researched, management programs which are strictly controlled. The leather is used to produce footwear, hand bags, wallets, belts and a range of other items in countries such as Singapore and France.
